4.20pm Design of comfortable seats to enhance the passenger travelling experience TNO Work and Employment – Robin Bronkhorst, Senior Advisor & Researcher

This presentation will look at how to design seats that are significantly more comfortable. TNO’s ergonomic innovation group in the Netherlands have developed a passenger seat that offers optimised comfort which in turn has enhanced the passengers travelling experience for the Long Island Rail Road, New York, USA. Passengers preferred the new and even narrower seat (five seats instead of four seats in a row). 83% rated it to have better and existing rolling stock will be a key challenge for the industry over the next 10 years of resting and sleeping possibilities, leg stretching and ingress/egress features

9.30am Development of a rail ATD and its application in improving the safety of interior design Rail Safety and Standards Board – Jim Lupton, Head of Engineering Research

This presentation will describe research aimed at improving interior crashworthiness by identifying the root causes of injury from fixtures and fittings. This has involved work in three distinct areas: updating the criteria used to describe harm to people in railway accidents; development of a rail-oriented test dummy to enable the extent of harm to be measured; and sled-testing using the new test dummy to measure forces obtained from collision with seats and tables to derive harm and identification of better design features to minimise that harm. This will be underpinned by a brief description of the breadth and depth of RSSB’s UK rail research programme
